Digitalization in the logistics sector

Every day we have been integrating technology in our day-to-day life in order to carry out our usual activities faster and in an immediate way, such as to check the latest news, program our electrical appliances through apps, or do the shopping through a marketplace such as Amazon or our favourite brands’ websites.
In the last 10 years’ consumers’ behaviour has changed, companies require accurate, real-time information so that to be able to make successful decisions. The same has been happening in the industrial and logistics area.
The companies from the transport and logistics sector must adapt to the customer needs by investing in value-adding technologies and at the same time improve the company’s productivity.
Hereunder, we are going to explain the three technological requirements which all the companies from the logistics sector should meet in order to improve:
- Online trucking systems for storage and transport: Give real-time information about the order status or customer goods. It seems easy, but it is necessary to develop a technology able to adapt to the company’s ERP system, that the warehouse works with radio frequency and that it changes its workings manners, that transport works with a platform (app integrated with the ERP) and that it reports order status, as well as that the drivers are up-to-date with technological tools in order to be able to notify the final delivery or any kind of incident. This involves a change in entrepreneurial mind-set so that the customer (B2B or B2C) is in the centre. In the end, if you achieve it, you give added value to the customer and the company saves resources in the area of operations and administration.
- Blockchain: it involves a technology which guarantees files and transactions transmission in a safe way. It is important for sending transport and logistics delivery notes, bills of lading or invoices to customers or suppliers. A system which is mostly used for FMCG projects is EDI. The benefits for its user are that it guarantees safe and fast communication through files. A disadvantage of this kind of technology is that it isn’t economical. However, it guarantees the ability to work in the Retail sector.
- Cybersecurity: Investing in defence against increasingly common cyber-attacks that logistics companies or other strategic sectors receive and all the information about their customers is stolen or their systems are blocked so that they cannot operate normally. After some days the hackers demand a ransom for being able to recover the normality. There are solutions for this kind of attacks which are adaptable to each company and its size.
In Nordlogway, these are the three points we have been working on at the digitalization level with the objective to improve our customers’ experience.
